ZOONOTIC DISEASE PREVENTION
-
Less Pain - Laser energy seals nerve endings as it moves through tissue. Your pet feels less post-operative pain.
-
Less Bleeding - The laser seals small blood vessels during surgery which allows us to perform surgeries with extraordinary precision. This also speeds some procedures reducing the need for prolonged anesthesia.
-
Less Swelling - Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise because only a beam of intense light contacts the tissue.
-
Reduced risk of infection - The laser sterilizes as it removes diseased tissue, killing bacteria that cause infection.
-
Precision - The laser can remove unhealthy tissue while minimizing adverse affects to surrounding tissue.

BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE
Veterinary patients feel pain and discomfort the same way that we do. We know that recognizing and alleviating pain in animals is the essence of good patient care.
The practice of pain management and medicine demands an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating multiple modalities to ensure the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of the patient that is in pain.
Murphy Road Animal Hospital believes in providing state of the art pain management for the comfort of our patients. Dr. Prior is a member of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management. It is a unique organization dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and advancing pain management in animals.
Female pets undergoing an ovariohysterectomy (spay) should have this procedure done prior to their first heat and preferably before six months of age. They will usually spend one night with us.
Males undergoing castration (neutering) should have this surgery performed prior to seven months of age. Your pet may be able to return home the same day or may need to stay overnight.
Surgical patients should not have food for the twelve hours preceding their surgery.
We take anesthesia and surgery seriously. All animals receive a physical exam before surgery, and we recommend presurgical screening for all patients. Our patients receive intra-operative fluids and are kept comfortable using patient warmers. They are monitored closely via state-of-the-art electronic patient monitors and by our well trained doctors and surgical nurses. Pain management is recommended for the comfort of all of our patients.
The doctors at Murphy Road Animal Hospital understand the special needs of our senior citizen patients.
These are addressed by careful and thorough physical examinations, periodic blood and urine screenings, blood pressure monitoring, pain management, and nutritional counseling. We are prepared to do our best to help make your pet's later years quality ones. Read more about our Senior Care Programs.

A central focus of our practice is geared to the pediatric patient. We have developed comprehensive programs to help assure that your pet has the best possible start in life including proper nutrition, timely immunizations, behavior counseling, preventive medications, preventive diagnostic services and safe, painless sterilization.
Zoonotic diseases are those that may be transmitted from animals to humans. At Murphy Road Animal Hospital, we strive to not only keep your pets healthy, but your family healthy too. Zoonosis mainly affect children, but chemotherapy patients, the immune-compromised, and even healthy adults may be at risk as well. We recommend monthly parasite preventives to lessen the likelihood of the most common zoonosis, but should you feel that you, or any family members may be at risk, please inform us, so we may develop a preventive program for you.
Cancer affects many animals in many stages of life. The doctors of Murphy Road Animal Hospital use a
multi-modality approach to treat this disease. We will set up and co-ordinate the referrals and treatment options required. This may involve a combination of traditional therapies, primarily surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, combined with medicine's newest modalities such as biological therapy and immunotherapy. We stock many oncology drugs in our pharmacy.
Our objective is to provide our pet owners with options. Options that allow us to provide state-of-the-art cancer care. Options that are tailored to the pet's particular tumor type and behavior. Options that seek to offer the most effective treatment available, or a combination of treatments, old or new. Options that provide the best quality of life for the pet with cancer.
Working as a team with the pet owner and specialist veterinarian, we seek additional ways to beat the disease, make the pet owner an active participant in the fight against their pet's cancer, and increase the pet's chances for recovery.
Regular professional dental cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. In fact regular prophylactic
dental care has been shown to add two to four years to your pet's life expectancy!! We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Our other services include oral surgery.
Dental care is provided using the most up-to-date and safest anesthetic procedures and protocols. All animals have i.v. catheters inserted, are given i.v. fluids during the procedure, and are placed on patient monitors and body warmers in order to regulate their body temperature while under anesthesia. We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. All patients are carefully screened to
assure a safe procedure, and presurgical bloodwork and ECG's are required for all older or sick patients.
Anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet and administered with modern anesthetic equipment by our carefully trained veterinary and technical staff. We strive to ensure the safest, most efficient, pain free procedures for your pet. Our facilities allow us to provide heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors, intra-operative fluid delivery, and intensive after surgery care.
We strongly recommend pre-surgical blood tests prior to general anesthesia even in apparently healthy patients. Pain management is an integral part of a successful surgery.
We are pleased to offer laser surgery as an exciting new option for safe, comfortable treatment. In many procedures the laser can replace the scalpel and provide a better alternative to traditional surgery.
Why use laser surgery?
What does it mean for my pet?
This non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal
organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs including liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, intestines, bladder, and reproductive organs. Pregnancy exams are also available. Our ultrasound equipment uses the latest in digital technology, eliminating storage and chemicals, thereby helping to protect the environment.
Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is probably the most difficult and painful aspect of pet ownership. We work with clients to ensure their pet's comfort and dignity. At your request, our services include "at home" euthanasia by your trusted doctor in a safe and dignified manner. We will also handle your pet's remains according to your wishes.
In any emergency seconds count. Our experienced staff is trained and equipped to administer the ABC's of basic life support: Airway, Breathing, Circulation/Cardiac compressions. Emergency care is offered during regular business hours. In addition, we use the services of three local, fully staffed emergency centers.

Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet. Our trained and certified staff is available to help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active. Most special diets are in stock and always available.
Obesity affects over 40% of the US pet population, and fat is now considered one of the most active endocrine organs in the body. If you consider your pet overweight, ask us today how we can help with this problem, extend your pet's life expectancy (by up to two years!), and improve its quality of life.

Our hospital has a well equipped modern laboratory, which allows us to have test results for serum chemistries, electrolytes, hematology, serology, and parasite testing on the same day and typically within one hour.
Is your pet a little slow? Maybe your older dog's arthritis is flaring up? Ask us if laser therapy might help.Laser therapy is an effective treatment for many cases of acute and chronic pain, inflammation and wound healing. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments, and has the benefit of being a drug-free, non-surgical, safe means of providing lasting pain relief. Ask us for more information. Your pet will be glad that you did. Click Here for more information.
High-tech fiber optics permits direct visual examination and biopsies of your pet's gastrointestinal system
. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment of oral, esophageal, stomach, colon and even upper intestinal tract disease. Foreign objects can sometimes be removed without the need for surgery.
We stock a wide range of the best veterinary drugs in the animal health care field. We are able to special order prescriptions that your pet may need. In addition we are able to compound almost any prescription, formulate it into a liquid medication and flavor it so that your pet will more readily accept it. We can make it taste like Grilled Tuna or Mom's Banana Bread, or how about Crispy Bacon or Cheesy Cheddar?
Sadly, euthanasia due to behavior problems is one of the leading causes of death of pets in the U.S., and more animals are relinquished to shelters for behavior than for any other reason.
At Murphy Road Animal Hospital, we take behavior problems very seriously, and part of your pet's overall health includes addressing behavior concerns. We offer counseling services to our clients, with special emphasis on teaching them how to prevent behavior problems from occurring in the first place.
Some of the more common behavior problems we deal with include separation anxiety, fearful behavior and aggression. Dr. Haber is a member of the American Society of Animal Behaviorists (AVSAB), a group of veterinarians and research professional who share an interest in understanding behavior in animals. He has been published in Behavior Today, a veterinary publication.
Many pets with behavior problems have an underlying physical health issue, thus we recommend that any animal with a behavior change or concern should have a full physical examination including bloodwork BEFORE seeking the services of a trainer. An owner consultation with one of our behavior experts is essential.
Remember, not all trainers use the correct methods or adhere to the guidelines of the American Society of Animal Behaviorists. Murphy Road Animal Hospital adheres to the latest standards and position statements set up by AVSAB.
The AVSAB is committed to improving the quality of life of all animals, and strengthening the bond between pets and their owners. We use positive reinforcement techniques only in order to facilitate the best learning and we avoid all techniques that could damage the animal-human-bond. Additionally, we strive to make every pet comfortable at our hospital using positive techniques such as treats and soft handling in every possible case.
